Common Condition

A herniated disc is like a jelly donut where the soft inside squirts out through a tear in the tough outer shell. This squished material presses on nearby nerves and usually causes pain, numbness, or weakness that shoots down the arm or leg. It is one of the most common reasons people get back, neck, or leg pain.
Symptoms may vary depending on the location and severity of the condition:
Localized aching or stiffness at the site of the disc herniation that worsens with movement or sitting.
Difficulty lifting objects, walking, or gripping due to weakened muscles in the affected limb.
Loss of sensation or “pins and needles” feeling in the arms, hands, legs, or feet served by the affected nerve.
Sharp or burning pain that travels from the lower back into the buttock and leg (sciatica) or from the neck into the arm and hand.
